Laura Marling’s debut album ” Alas I cannot Swim” is not just one of my favorite albums of this year however has been a runaway success with a string of nominations including The Nationwide Mercury Music Award and the Guardian Debut Album of the Year. I first came across Laura Marling last year when I saw
Noah & The Whale perform at Dingwals. Whilst I certainly was not blown away by her stage presence I was impressed by her unusual vocals which reminded me a bit of an early Beth Orton.
Last night’s gig was the first of two sold out performances at The Scala. Her performance was characteristically low key however the audience was captivated. It great to see more acoustic based female singer songwriters break through. Although it easy to criticize the state of the UK music industry I think this year has been vintage year for leftfield artists such as Laura Marling.
