Gibson Slash

the_courteeners_01.JPGAlready the speculation has started on who is going to be this years Klaxons, The Enemy, CSS, Maccabees, Pigeon Detectives….personally I find this kind of journalism incredibly lazy and often is largely based on the amount of free lunches and “gifts” that the PR’s provide the journos in the weeks coming up to Christmas. The top ten lists are normally rehashed so if you a) don’t know what’s going to be successful, b) have the talent to recognise good new bands, c) particularly care what’s successful or not, it’s a great way fill your magazine.

That said Manchester based band The Courteeners are actually pretty good. The band are being heralded as the next Libertines/Babyshambles and whilst again I think this is a pretty obvious comparison I do think that they along with Foals probably will be one of the bands most likely to break this year. Their recent single “What took so long” has been a favourite on XFM for the past month and although I have to admit liking it cannot understand why anyone would want to write “what took you so long, was there a queue at the post office?” common guys what were you thinking???? I can’t imagine Ian Brown, Richard Ashcroft or Ian Curtis writing anything quite as banal however I guess their musical reference don’t go back further than Up the Bracket.
